Protected by high, perfectly straight walls, the city was divided into nine sections reflecting the nine divisions of the universe as laid out in the Hindu horoscope. The meticulous planning, the right combination of commerce and beauty, the introduction of revolutionary ideas like uniform shops, wide roads neatly dividing the various living quarters (mohallas) and proper sanitation, attracted visitors from all over the world.Jaipur is known as the Pink City for the colour of the plaster used to cover the walls of many of the temples, forts, palaces and buildings in the old section of the city.
